Ferraro Named Jupiter Fire Rescue Department Medical Director
JUPITER, Fla. – Michael Ferraro has been named the Medical Director for the Jupiter Fire Rescue Department (JFRD) after a vote by the Jupiter Town Council Tuesday evening.
Ferraro is an Emergency Medicine Physician with more than 20 years of experience caring for both adults and pediatric patients. Currently, he serves as an Emergency Medicine Physician with Jupiter Medical Center and is an Emergency Department Physician with the Cleveland Clinic in Stuart, Fla. Ferraro is also the Medical Director for the Treasure Coast Medical Institute, an accredited Emergency Medical Services school located in Fort Pierce, Fla.
“We are honored to have Dr. Ferraro join the Jupiter Fire Rescue Department as our new Medical Director,” stated JFRD Fire Chief Darrel Donatto. “Dr. Ferraro is very highly regarded in both the medical field and by the firefighters who have had the opportunity to work with him. We feel very strongly that we have found the best candidate to provide excellent medical direction to our future firefighters with JFRD.
“Dr. Ferraro’s position with Jupiter Medical Center also strengthens an already close bond between the Town of Jupiter and JMC,” Donatto continued. “As we build our world-class hometown fire department, we feel it important to work very closely with our world-class hometown medical center.”
Ferraro served as the Medical Director for Martin County Fire Rescue from 2016 until 2021 and filled the same role for Jupiter Island Public Safety from 2017 until 2021. He has served as an Adjunct Clinical Faculty Member for the Florida State University College of Medicine since 2020 and was also the Indian River State College Medical Director between 2014 and 2019.
“As the Medical Director for Martin County Fire Rescue, Ferraro implemented a number of cutting edge medical innovations, including adding both whole blood and ultrasound to the life-saving tools used by the firefighters and paramedics,” Donatto added. “Under Ferraro’s guidance, JFRD also plans on providing these services in Jupiter.”
Ferraro brings unique experience to his role overseeing the medical care that Jupiter’s firefighters will provide to the community. He served as a firefighter/EMT for Eagleville Fire Rescue in Eagleville, Conn. from 1997 until 2000 and held the same role with the Plantation (Fla.) Fire Department from 2000 until 2003.
Ferraro earned his Doctorate of Osteopathy from Nova Southeastern University in 2004 and also holds a Masters in Physiology and Neurobiology from the University of Connecticut and a Bachelor of Arts from Eckerd College. He completed an internship in Emergency Medicine in 2005 and his residency in Emergency Medicine in 2008, both at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills, Mich.
Ferraro’s appointment as Medical Director for JFRD was the result of a Request for Proposal (RFP) process managed by the Town. Submitted proposals were rated based upon a number of areas, including medical experience, quality of proposer and expertise, understanding of the overall project, quality of response, and meeting all board certifications and emergency medicine requirements.
