Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)

INTRODUCTION

As part of the Town’s ongoing improvements to ensure delivery of safe, high-quality potable water to our customers, the Utilities Department will begin a system-wide upgrade of water metering equipment in Spring 2026, with anticipated completion in April 2028.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is state-of-the-art metering technology in use by most water utilities nationwide. AMI provides advanced metering technology with improved accuracy and near real-time access to usage data for both customers and utility staff. Early detection of leaks or other unusual water consumption trends will be more easily recognized with AMI, resulting in improved response time and consumer satisfaction, and cost savings associated with wasted water and water damage. AMI transmits encrypted metering data over a secure network to the Town’s Utility databases for access by Town of Jupiter Utility Customer Service staff. Customers will also have access to their water consumption data via an online portal and smart device app.

AMI will provide these key benefits:

  • Daily reads for faster response and better service
  • Early leak detection and high-bill alerts
  • Customer access to real-time usage data by an online portal and mobile app
  • Improved customer engagement that encourages conservation
  • Reliable and accurate meter readings
  • Improved system maintenance

AMI Installation- What to Expect:

  • An inspection of the meter box on your property will be conducted to identify any encroachments (landscaping, fencing, pavers, personal items, etc.) that may exist within 3 feet from the outside edge of the meter box.
  • If an encroachment(s) exists, you will be notified in writing via the postal system of the need to remove the encroachment within 90 days. Town staff will also attempt to make contact with any property with an encroachment. Failure to remove an encroachment may result in fines, additional costs to you and removal of the encroachment by the Town or its contractor.
  • A letter will be mailed to you about 2 weeks before AMI installation is scheduled to begin in your neighborhood.
  • The Town’s contractor will knock on your door immediately prior to the commencement of work at your property in order to provide notice that water service to the home will be shut off. The entire process will take about 20-30 minutes, and will require your water to be shut off temporarily, for about 5-10 minutes.

At Time of Installation:

The work will be done by a Town of Jupiter-approved vendor, Core & Main partnered with VEPO. All contractors have undergone a background check. Contractor vehicles will also be identified by a temporary Town of Jupiter Utilities Contractor logo.

After AMI is installed at your home/business:

Once the installation is complete, there is no further action that you will need to take. You may notice changes in your monthly bill since your water usage will be more accurately reflected on a daily basis. Questions regarding your water usage and your bill can be answered by the Town’s Customer Service team at 561-741-2300 or Utilities@jupiter.fl.us.
