Course Description
Explore the unique aspects of life in Jupiter and the inner workings of Jupiter's local

 VISION:

and VIBRANT SMALL TOWN FEEL!
government!  Using the Town's strategic plan as a framework, this program is designed around the Town's vision and five "themes" in Jupiter's strategic plan

  • All Neighborhoods as Desirable Places to Live
  • Jupiter as a Unique, Livable Community
  • Improved Mobility within Jupiter
  • Strong Local Economy
  • Responsive, Sustainable Local Government

These themes define the long-term goals for the community and determine the programs and initiatives offered and developed by the local government.

During the sessions, you will learn about Jupiter's history and heritage, and how it has shaped life in Jupiter today. You will understand how natural, physical, recreational, and financial assets are managed by Town leaders to enhance quality of life, provide a safe and secure community, and provide for managed growth and a strong local economy. You will have an opportunity to meet and ask questions of members of Jupiter's town council, the town manager, and key members of town staff.  You will also have an opportunity to join optional tours to learn more about specific aspects of the Town. Day 1 - Wednesday, March 7, 2012
 
9am - 12pm
Tour of the Loxahatchee River District and the Jupiter Solid Waste Authority Transfer Station
Meet bus at Jupiter Community Center, 200 Military Trail
NOTE: The SWA portion of the tour is subject to change.
Departing from the Jupiter Community Center at 9am, this tour's first stop is the Loxahatchee River District's treatment plant off of Central Boulevard.  See how wastewater is managed in an environmentally-friendly way, and learn about LRD's commitment to reuse and conservation.  Then, board the bus to the Solid Waste Authority's Jupiter Transfer Station, and learn how your recycled goods are processed.  You'll be amazed at how Jupiter's various waste products are treated!

2pm - 4pm
Tour of the Jupiter Water Treatment Plant

Tour Jupiter's state-of-the-art Nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant on Central Boulevard, and learn how your drinking water becomes drinkable.  Also, learn about how Jupiter exceeds water quality requirements and manages resources to run an efficient, world-class treatment plant that produces safe, clean drinking water.

Day 2 - Thursday, March 8, 2012

Tour of the Jupiter Police Department
210 Military Trail
Meet the officers -- human and canine -- who protect and serve the residents of Jupiter every day.  Learn how JPD uses the latest in crime prevention and law enforcement methods and technology to make sure that our neighborhoods, streets, schools and workplaces are safe and secure.  Learn about the police department's work within the community, and the importance of working wtih residents and businesses for a safer Jupiter.

Panel Session I: Responsive, Sustainable Local Government and Strong Local Economy
Jupiter Community Center, 200 Military Trail
Join moderator Ed Chase, President of the Northern Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce, for this panel-style session.  Hear how the Town’s resources work together to improve the quality of life in Jupiter.  Learn about how the Town is working to grow the local economy, attract new businesses, and support existing ones.  In this session, you’ll hear about Town programs and initiatives like:
  • Jupiter’s form of government, and local government’s role in residents’ lives
  • The Town’s organization, strategy and service philosophy
  • Financial planning and budgeting
  • Economic development and bioscience initiatives
  • Business development activities
  • The Town’s role in the Florida Regional Center, or EB5 District
   
Day 3 - Monday, March 12, 2012

Panel Session II: All Neighborhoods as Desirable Places to Live, Jupiter as a Unique, Livable Community, and Improved Mobility within Jupiter
Jupiter Community Center, 200 Military Trail
Learn about the Town’s efforts to maintain quality of life and manage growth in and around Jupiter’s neighborhoods street-by-street. You’ll hear about serving the recreational and service needs of Jupiter’s residents to create a livable Jupiter, elements of Jupiter’s “uniqueness,”  and balancing growth and economic development with traffic impacts and improved transportation.  In this session you’ll learn about Town programs and initiatives like:
  • Neighborhood Services
  • Community Policing activities and Code Compliance
  • Riverwalk, and the Town’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA)
  • Jupiter’s network of parks and natural areas, and historic preservation efforts
  • Transportation planning efforts and Transportation Oriented Design (TOD)
  • Infrastructure and roadway projects—the Town’s and partner agencies
   
Day 4 - Tuesday, March 13, 2012
 
9:30am - 12pm
Tour of Jupiter's Riverwalk, Natural Areas and Parks
150 S. US Highway 1 (Riverwalk parking garage)
Meet at the Riverwalk parking garage just south of the Indiantown Road bridge for a walking tour of the Riverwalk's existing natural areas, and residential and shopping districts.  Learn about future Riverwalk sections, and plans to complete the 2.5 mile intracoastal pathway.  Then, board an air-conditioned coach for a riding tour of Jupiter's beautiful, protected conservation areas -- or Open Space lands -- as well of some of Jupiter's more popular parks.  The bus will drop you back at the Riverwalk garage just in time for lunch on your own at the popular waterfront restaurants along the Riverwalk -- the Dive Bar Restaurant or Cafe des Artistes.

Day 5 - Wednesday, March 14, 2012
 
11am - 1pm
Jupiter History Tour
Jupiter Community Center, 200 Military Trail
NOTE: Includes picnic lunch.
Jupiter U's most popular tour, the Jupiter History Tour is back and better than ever.  Board the air-conditioned bus at the Jupiter Community Center for a narrated tour west-bound to historic Riverbend Park, where noted historian Richard Procyk will speak about the rich history of the park and its battles.  A picnic lunch will be provided, then its back on the bus for a guided tour through and by Jupiter's most historic sites.  Next stop is the famous Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, where the wonderful guides at the Loxahatchee River Historical Society will take you on a tour of the Lighthouse property, which sits on 126 acres of Federally-protected land.  After touring the Lighthouse and museum, board the bus for a narrated trip back to your car at the Community Center.
